I have been playing golf ever since I was 3-4. I love it. The pro I take lessons from says that if I improve at the pace I am now, I will be able to get a scholorship for college. But, my school, being in the small town it’s in, doesn’t have a golf team. I’ve heard many things from some teachers or family members that this is illegal because it can deny me a scholorship. Although I’ve also heard that If I want to enter in a tournament representing my town they’ll have to pay for it.

nope not illegal at all. school administrators can choose to cut program accordingly. they can cut programs or not have programs because of financial issues, or not enough people joining, or they feel it is not safe. they can cut and not put in programs as they choose. so to answer you question it is not illegal
I doubt very much it;s illeagle.
Hey we have no handball team. There is college hand ball. there are schools in my area that don;t even have a football team.
It is entirely up to the school district, school or governing body to determine what sports are represented based on demand as well as available funding. Have you ever seen a cricket team in the US? How about badminton or handball, bowling or water skiing. These are all sports, but rarely have a team.
to just wonderin’… the schools in my area do offer a variety of these activities… Commack has a bowling and badmitton team… so there are schools out there that offer it… i know there are a couple of schools on Long Island that have badmitton…Also a district policy we have is if a school near us has a team that we don’t have we are allowed to try out for that others team
Your buddies are blowing smoke. It’s finances. Perhaps they want to buy new books for the school library or hire a new teacher or upgrade the science lab. School sports, while fun, are not a right.
Everyone’s correct it’s not illegal. However, that doesn’t solve your problem of wanting to play. Here’s some suggestions. I’m not sure about your state but the state I live in has a very strong junior golf program (under 18). Contact your state golf assocation (do a google search) and find out about the tournaments available to you. Contact the PGA in your section and ask the same questions. The Soutwest PGA runs a “junior tour” in the summer using local clubs. Great golf for about $10 a tournament. As far as school goes. Talk with your Athletic Director and see if you can participate as an individual and represent your school. You can also talk with your state Interscholastic Association and see what their By Laws say about individual player for schools with no teams. I hope you get to play tournament golf. Good luck.
Nothing illegal about it. If there is not enough of an interest for a team to be formed, then there will be no team. One person does not make enough of an interest for a team to be formed. Play junior tournaments or transfer schools. The previous one would be a more viable option than the latter. As far as the town paying for a tournament you enter representing the town, that’s crazy. No one does that. Golf is an individual sport, therefore you have to fit the bill.
Your teachers and family members have been WAAAY misinformed.
Your school doesn’t have to have a golf team if it doesn’t want to. Being you’re from a small town, it probably either can’t afford it or knows not many people would be involved. Either way, your school is not required by law to have a golf program.
Also, you CAN be denied a scholarship if you’re not good enough. I’m not saying you’re not a good player because I don’t know you, but if the sponsors for whatever golf scholarship you’re looking into don’t think you’re good enough to get the scholarship, you’re SOL.
you can play for another school probably. I know its allowed in Pennsylvania
It’s not illegal if it’s not budgeted for. It falls in the tough sh!t category. Try making the golf team on a school team in your area. Walk on are normally allowed. Perhaps your pro can provide some suggestions.
it sucks man but there’s nothing illegal about it… a school can chose what sports they want to support and golf is one of the more expensive ones no matter what with course time
It sucks but it is up to the district or school. A couple of my friends went to a different school than me and the school didn’t have a golf team. They called me asking what to do since I have 2 cousins that are pros etc. So first, they got a group of girls that wanted to play golf and wrote down names and phone numbers. Then they all wrote letters as to why they wanted to play golf. Then they met with the athletic director. They had to find a coach, they found a teacher that has played golf his whole life and played in college.. and they found a local pro that would volunteer. Then after many meetings and such.. they got their golf team! Now only 3 of the 10 girls had played golf before. The rest just kinda picked it up and loved it. You should try to do the same thing. Yes, it is true they can deny a scholarship.. I had talked to my cousin about that. I don’t know about entering a tournament.. you might what to check with your athletic director at school.
If all else fails, go to a different school one day and meet with their AD and golf coach. I know they usually allow kids to try out and walk on from a school that doesn’t have a golf team.
Good Luck!
