How do I cure this golfing habbit?

I am a beginning 14 year-old right-handed golf golfer. I can hit the ball (w/ a 3 wood) about 160 yards in displacement and 120 yards in lateral distance at the range. I choose to use the three wood becuase I have not control over my Sasquatch driver that was rented to me at lessons. My ball at the beginning gets a nice height and then curves absurdly to the right. I think it gets too much distance to be classified as a slice especially in comparison to other shots and this is happens 70% of the time.

try a different stance, or try a different grip. this cured me from my curves.
just go to a driving range and try out a bunch of different foot positions and hand positions, and try all kids of combos till you find something that works.

You need to have the left hand turn more at impact and you need to practice swinging inside out.

You’re right, it isn’t a slice, but close. I have the same problem. I golf left handed (huge pain to find clubs!), and when I drive I get pretty good distance, the only problem is that the damn ball hooks as far to the left as it does straight. The problem is with your wrists. You may not realize it, but you are very likely opening the club face as you swing, which comes from you rotating your wrists as you swing through the ball. It comes from “weak” wrists. If you practice enough, you’ll learn to drive straight, and not open the club face. I know this is the case, because I am ridiculously accurate with my irons, but I suck with the woods. For the record, a five wood is supposed to be the most forgiving to your swing. Try it, I have noticed a diffrence for myself. Spend enough time concentrating on locking your wrists, and enough time at the range, and it will clear up. Good luck dude!

Oh- and a big fu*k you to ding dong. Golf takes a hell of a lot more skill than basketball. Any buffon can pick up a basketball and compete, but it takes years practice to reach that level with golf. You either have no idea what you are talking about, or you just plain suck and are jealous. So, for the future, STFU when you have no clue what you are talking about.

I had the same problem when I started… But whatever you read or hear wont work…. Every golfer has a different stance and different way of swinging… My advice is just spend $60 and talk to the instructor…. I was trying too hard to correct it on my own, but didnt work… The instructor will tell you if you should improve the grip or the backswing or something else…. good luck..

Take a lesson from competent instructor. They’ll spot your problem and explain what you are doing and what you should be doing. Hopefully they will be able to demonstrate both so that you will see the difference. Also, watch some good players practice so that you can see what a golf swing should look like. When done properly (with high efficiency) the golf swing is beautiful to watch. A good swing is smooth, flowing, and balanced.

yeah good avice with getting the left hand/arm involved more, and swinging from the inside. also, watch the left hand grip…you wanna see more than one knuckle.

Stick with your pro for advices. But, for one thing though, don’t forget how you do this. It is a miracle shot. Once you turn pro, there may come a time when you need to manufacture this shot, and I’ll tell you it’s gonna impress the world.
